2 million deaths every year
AIDS has taken over 27 million lives since its discovery in the early 80s. Each year 3 million people are infected and more than 2 million succumb to diseases resulting from the weakening of the immune system. Thanks to new antiretroviral therapies, the spread of HIV in the body can be slowed down. Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most affected by the epidemic, recording 69% of all new infections.
